This will be a no nonsense guide on how to farm gil by crafting and selling items on the Market Board for profit in Final Fantasy XIV. It is possible to use this method with no knowledge of the crafting system because our provided Macros will do the crafting for you. Also, there’ll be no gathering involved because we’ll be buying the relatively cheap materials from the Market Board.
Whether you plan to stockpile large amounts of gil (100mil+) or sit comfortably on a good amount of gil (~25mil), this guide will show you the optimal way to do so.
Keep in mind that this method is not a get rich quick method (unless it’s the first few weeks after a major patch!); this will simply be a way for you to generate gil in an easy, consistent way any time you need it. Many Crafters who are filthy rich simply followed this method over a long period of time and were well prepared when a major update was upcoming.

3 Million Gil for Materials
Introduction: How to Make Gil in FFXIV
The three main ways to acquire large amounts of gil (25 Million+) consistently in Final Fantasy XIV:
Buy Gil (Turn to The Dark Side)
Quick and easy, for those who don’t care about ToS and want to live the easy life low-key.
Sell Content (Sell Your Body)
If you’re part of the fflogs elite with connections to selling linkshells, discords and what not; you’ll earn the privilege to work for crafters and gil buyers. You’ll be killing bosses for them while they take the rare loot in exchange for gil.
Crafting (The Honest Gillionaire)
The most consistent way of making large amounts of gil in FFXIV. Sell the latest gear, food and potions; all with your name on it. It is not unusual for Crafters to make anywhere from 5-25 Million Gil weekly depending on how active they are. However, be warned, becoming a crafter means enlisting yourself into the undercutting war taking place on the Market Board.
Nearly every other method of making gil will require relatively more grind with little return when compared with crafting. That said, all methods of making gil are still dependent on timing to be most effective. In the first week after a major update, you can make 3-4 times more than you would at any other period. A well-prepared Crafter with additional Retainers can easily pull in well over 100 Million in the first few weeks after a major patch.
Oh, and house flipping, can’t forget house flipping. Good Luck !
Gathering? Don't Waste Your Time
First, let us start by establishing that gathering is a waste of time in most cases, or at the very least an opportunity cost. Time spent gathering could be better spent crafting, undercutting, raiding or simply having fun playing other games. Understanding how to utilise your retainers and your time to the fullest is key to accumulating gil without burning yourself out.
Advantages: Buying Mats from the Market Board
In most cases, base materials like ores come dirt cheap and are hardly worth the time spent gathering them. It is also physically easier to make gil if you don’t have to worry about gathering because Macros will be doing the crafting for you.
Your time is your most valuable asset
Universalis: Market Research
Universalis.App is a way of searching the Market Board from your browser, this website tool allows you to find the cheapest prices on any World without having to visit them directly in-game.
One caveat however, all information in universalis.app is crowdsourced so it may not be exactly accurate but commonly desired items and materials are updated fairly regularly.
OK....What to Sell?
The goal is to craft a total of 40 items that are in high demand and regularly sell for good prices on the Market Board.
Good starting points:
- Level 90★★ i590 Crafter & Gatherer Armour + Tools
- Level 90★★ i580 Armour and Weapons
- Level 90★★ Grade 6 Tinctures & Food
- Level 51-87 Crafter & Gatherer Armour + Tools
The Level 90★★ Classical DoW/DoM and AR-Caean DoH/DoL sets are currently the latest gear for Battle Classes and Crafter/Gatherer Classes. Primal Weapons are also popular for Glamour due to their glowing particle effects. This means new, and old players are always purchasing these items to gear up their new characters or classes.
Note: It can be fairly overwhelming to craft a large number of items in the beginning so it may be wise to start with 10-15 items the first time round.
Crafting List: Shopping for Ingredients
We will be using Crafting as a Service to create a Crafting List.
Crafting as a Service aka FFXIV Crafting is a website tool that allows you to search for recipes and create a total list of materials required.
- Visit the Recipes page in Crafting as A Service.
- Search for the items that you wish to sell and add them to your Crafting List
- Once you’ve selected your items, visit the Crafting List page to see the full list of items you have chosen
- Select [Craft These Items] to see a full list of the ingredients that you’ll need to obtain
You’ll need to buy all of materials listed under [Origin: Gathered] and [Origin: Other] from the Market Board. This should come to a fraction of the amount of gil that the crafted Weapons will sell for.
Use Universalis.App to find the cheapest materials on the Market Board to maximize your profits.
After you’ve bought the required materials, craft all of the items listed under [Origin: Pre-Requisite Crafting] in Crafting as a Service.
Note: Scroll to the bottom and toggle [Self Sufficient] if you wish to only see the final ingredients required.
Buying Mats: Ores vs Ingots
It is usually significantly cheaper to craft your own materials, especially in cases where you require some HQ materials to reliably HQ your items when crafting with Macros. However, this can become quite time consuming with larger crafting lists; in these cases it may be easier to buy some NQ mats if your stats and macros permit it. NQ crafting mats can occasionally be found at very low prices so be sure to grab them if you see any on the Market Board. Remember, searching for items on universalis.app is one of the best ways to save gil and maximize profits.
DIY HQ Alkahests
Grade 6 Alkahests are the best items to use for HQ materials as they yield 3 units when crafted. Using our suggested BiS Crafting Gearset, you should not need to use HQ Materials but those who fall short on stats can fall back on HQ Grade 6 Alkahests to fill the gap for a 100% HQ Chance.
The following macro can be used to craft Alkahests or any other Level 90 ★★ 35 Durability materials:
Example Recipe: Grade 6 Strength Alkahest
Craftsmanship: 3273, Control: 3426, CP: 647
Food (HQ): Tsai tou Vounou
Potion (HQ): Cunning Craftsman’s Draught
FFXIV Teamcraft Simulation
Notes: 100% HQ Chance

Ready, Set, Macro !
Once you have bought and/or crafted all of the required materials as per your Crafting List, you can now prepare to craft the final items with Macros.
Be sure to run a test synthesis with the Macro to ensure everything works.
For the Level 90★★ Recipes, you will be using the following macro:
Example Recipe: Grade 6 Tincture of Strength
Craftsmanship: 3290, Control: 3327, CP: 655
Food (HQ): Tsai tou Vounou
Potion (HQ): Cunning Craftsman’s Draught

Managing Your Retainers
Once you’ve done crafting the items, put all 10 items for sale on your retainer. Be sure to undercut any previous listings so yours appear at the very top.
Undercutting will happen whether you like it or not. You will either be the one doing it or be on the receiving end of everyone doing it. I advise you devise your own strategy on how you do your own undercutting but patience is a necessity for success in any case.
You can also use universalis.app to check for prices, and see if your items have sold on the Market Board without having to check your retainers in-game.
Best Times to Update Prices
Consider the habits of other players when deciding when to put items up for sale or update your prices.
Peak active times are usually 18:00~22:00 ST (Especially Weekends)
This means your items are likely to sell faster as there are more players using the Market Board, but this also means your competition is more likely to be online and checking their prices.
Most players go to bed by 00:00 ST
Your items are less likely to sell quickly after this time, but this also means your competition have probably gone to bed and will be unable to undercut you. This allows you to undercut everyone and collect gil from all the night owls shopping during the unholy hours.
Get into a routine by updating your retainers at the best times and watch your gil quickly pile up.
Re: Crafting and Selling
You should be aiming to always have a minimum of 40 DIFFERENT items listed for sale on your Retainers to make the most out of them. Avoid relisting duplicates of the same item. Be sure to use universalis.app and Crafting as a Service to check prices regularly and create Crafting Lists to stay efficient.
Once your items begin to sell, use the proceeds to buy more materials and keep your retainers fully stocked.
Once you can afford to, it is strongly advised to keep a stock of materials in your inventory to make crafting future items much faster. Check your sale history and relist items immediately after they have sold.
Diversify Your Bonds, Ninja
Don’t stick to items that are falling in price, use universalis.app to stay updated on prices to sell the best items and maximize profits.
Level 90 ★★ Potions (ALC) and Food (CUL) are always a good option in addition to Gear to sell for profit. Raiders often stock up on potions / food and do the majority of their shopping on Tuesday afternoons / evenings.
Congratulations, you now know how to farm gil by crafting and selling on the Market Board. Keep it up for a few weeks and you’ll never have to worry about gil again.
